As many of you know, I am a HUGE fan and supporter of Story Corps. (In case you aren’t acquainted, Story Corps’ mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world…to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters.) Also, as many of you know, I think teachers are the BEST. One of my favorite bumper stickers ever was, “If you can read this, thank a teacher.”
Well, early summer is that time of year! As the school year comes to an end, it’s a great time to be in touch with that teacher who meant so much. Whether you write a note, make a call, or plan a visit, your appreciation is the true “pay” on which most teachers flourish. Especially for graduating seniors, taking a moment to reflect on those devoted professionals who taught them the world….it’s just the right time!
And while you’re at it, how about a family dinner table conversation? Have you told your kids about the teacher(s) who made a huge difference in your life? What about if you and your kids shared about your favorite teachers and then considered what makes a great teacher? Maybe you’d even want to talk over how to honor a teacher with our lives.
Enjoy the teacher/student stories in the link below. Listen together and use these stories as prompts for conversations? However you choose to do it, make this the time of year to let teachers know how valued they are to each of us, kids and parents alike!
